The 'Hip Hop' Collection - A Defining Moment in 90s Chanel History
In the early 90s, Karl Lagerfeld was on a mission to transform the brand's somewhat stuffy image. His keen eye for the cultural zeitgeist and deep respect for Gabrielle’s precious house codes proved a phenomenal success.
This collection has often been called his hip hop collection but that's just half the story - the collection also featured biker jackets, heavy boots, frayed denim, dog collars and mesh body stockings. With touches of rock n roll, BDSM and 80s Madonna, this was a broader statement around the new rebellious spirit of a brand becoming more respectful and embracing of downtown street style.
We adore this collection for the huge earrings, heavily layered pearls and Gripoix beads, warrior bracelet stacks, numberplate pendants and heavy chains over tailored silhouettes. Here are some of our favourite looks:
